Read the menu carefully. Ask questions, but understand that most waiters, and even many cooks, do not know what gluten is and so cannot guarantee that any food is gluten-free. It is best when in doubt to order things which are sure to be safe, such as plain potatoes, rice, fresh fruits and vegetables. Stay away from sauces, gravies, baked goods, batter and salad dressings; these almost always contain gluten. It is perfectly alright to bring your own supplemental foods with you, such as rice or corn cakes to have while others are eating bread. On the rare occasion when a restaurant employee may question you, raising the spectre of Food Allergy will be sufficient to end all discussion; the restaurant certainly does not want to make you ill.
